CHARLOTTE PORTRAIT GROUP

FAQ's

What's the schedule like...?

For portrait sessions, we host one posture for three hours. We break up the three hours into 20-minute sessions with a 5 to 10-minute break in between each session. This math is usually 5 to 6 sessions.

Specific Breakdown:
The model sits on stage for 20 minutes, we break for 5 to 10 minutes (this varies on the model's need to move and the hosts ask's the artists for a vote; the Model will always get the final say in the length of break). After the break, the model returns to the same posture and sits for another 20 minutes. This is repeated for the length of 3 hours.

What can or do the artists bring?

Kevin and Chalice arranged this class specifically for artists to take their time. We invite oil, acrylic, pastels, charcoal, clay, collage, etc. You may bring whatever inspiration calls to you. We only ask that if you use spray paint or fixative, that you to use them outside. For a list of recommended supplies from Chalice, click here.

What is provided to the artsits?

We offer chairs and TV tray tables. Everything is available on a first-come, first-served basis. We highly advise you to bring a travel easel.

We also offer snacks and a mechanical pencil sharpener at all sessions. We offer wine during the evening sessions. We do ask if you have more than one snack or glass of wine that you please consider a donation to the host for CPG.

What is provided for the model?

The model is in a cushy, high-back support chair on a portable stand. The sessions are in a photography studio, so professional lighting equipment is set up.

What are the ethics for working with the model at CPG?

At CPG, we ask that artists sign a 'Model Bill of Rights.' To get acquainted, you can click here. This is a simple google form with reminders on respect and gratitude for working from the human figure.

Are reference photos allowed?

At CPG, we allow reference photos for the artists—ONLY IF THE MODEL SAYS YES. If the model is okay with reference photos, we insist on a $5 minimum tip.

Is food or drink provided or allowed?

We do not serve food, but anyone can bring what they need for the three hours. Please refrain from bringing peanuts, as one of the hosts is deadly allergic to them.

Are traveling models compensated for travel expenses?

Unfortunately, CPG can not currently offer travel expenses for models. Hopefully, we can financially afford such requirements in the future.

What can the model's wear?

We let the models (who can also be artists) pick and choose what they wear. Come as you are! We have had people dress up in cosplay, victorian attire, and more. We post about our models and a theme that they choose to dress up in so our artists can plan accordingly. Our only ask is that the costumes are not 'promiscuous'. We are clothed portrait sessions so teens can come and draw with us, and we don't want to hear any negative feedback from parents. Now, 'promiscuous' can be suggestive and vary from person top person. Our suggestion is if you could wear it out in public, and your grandmother wouldn't tattle on you to the authorities, then you're good.

Do you host on holidays?

We do not host on holidays or near holidays. However! If there is a 5th Wednesday in the month, we use it to ensure we give our artists 4 sessions a month to practice their craft.

Do you wear masks?

We mask up as a group when the CDC mandates it. We won't mask the model since that is 50% of the face. Artists are more than welcome to come with a mask if they need to, and we do ask that if you feel under the weather, please stay home.

Why $15?

The standard rate in Charlotte, NC, for a three-hour session is $15, equivalent to $5 an hour. We are one of the few studios that insist on paying the model $25 an hour for their time. You can find more information on the local figure and portrait sessions in and around Charlotte at Figure Drawing Around Charlotte.

Where is La Luz located in VAPA?

La Luz is located on the second floor. Get on the elevator from the 1st floor; when you exit the elevator, take an immediate left and turn left again. La Luz is the first door located on the right side. Click here for studio maps to help with your journey.
